Owl Moon

Owl Moon

Author: Jane Yolen
Illustrator: John Schoenherr

Theme: Adventure, Process
Genre: Picture book, Fiction
Age Level: Kindergarten -2nd grade

Synopsis: A father and daughter go out on a winter night in search of a great horned owl. As they walk in silence through the snow they come across a fox, raccoon, fieldmouse, and deer watching them. Pa then makes the call of the owl without a reply. Eventually they finally hear an echo from an owl as it sits in a tree watching them.

This is a good book to talk with students about the process of doing something. The little girl goes through the process of what it is like to go on a walk to look for owls.  I also believe that this book would be a good intro into a unit of lesson on owls.

Pre-reading activity: Ask students what they already know about owls, and make a list of these facts. Then discuss some other facts about owls with the students.

Post Reading Activity: Have students make their own drawings of their own Owl Walk, based off of the illustrations in the book. After they have made their pictures have them write a description of their picture, using facts that they have learned and know about owls.

About the Author: Jane Yolen has written over 300 books, from children's to adult books. She has won many awards and has received six honorary doctorates in literature. Visit her site to find a list of her many works, and resources for teachers and students.

  1. This looks like a great book! I am not familiar with this book, but I have many other books by Jane Yolen, she is an excellent author. Another book to keep in mind that discusses some owl facts in a fun story is Owl Babies, it's one of my favorites!
